Gwendolyn and SMA on NPR!September 30, 2010 by Victoria Strong
We are beyond excited! NPR or National Public Radio's highly respectedCalifornia Report is airing an interview about Gwendolyn and spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) this Friday and Saturday! The segment will be aired statewide on Friday at 4:30pm PT on over 30 stations and again inSanta Barbara and Ventura County on Saturday at 2:00pm PT on NPR's KCLU 102.3FM (you can also listen to this segment live online at KCLU's website).
We first met freelance radio producer Diane Bock, who is also a respiratory therapist, when Gwendolyn was hospitalized with a collapsed lung at 7-months-old. Although she was only our respiratory therapist once, she said she has kept up with Gwendolyn and our family because we left an impact on her. We hadn't spoken to Diane until she emailed us in May of this year. This summer she took part in the covetedDuke University's Center for Documentary Studies program to craft an audio documentary on a subject of her choosing. She selected SMA and Gwendolyn's story. We met with Diane several times in the early summer and she recorded hours and hours of us talking about our life with Gwendolyn, SMA, GSF, the SMA Treatment Acceleration Act, etc. (we tend to be a bit long winded when we get going on this stuff. ) And we are very excited that the California Report liked what she created so much that they had her edit a specific story for them. We haven't heard it yet, but we were so impressed with Diane that we know it will be a wonderful opportunity for SMA.
The California Report provides daily coverage of issues, trends, and public policy decisions affecting California and its diverse population. It is carried by more than 30 radio stations from Arcata to San Diego, reaching millions of Californians.
