Project Mariposa :: {WEEK TWO} iPad Grant #12+

It is only week two of theGSF's Project Mariposa and we are already on grant #12! 12 iPads. 12 $50 iTunes gift cards. 12 lives impacted. Today we are thrilled to introduce you to grantee number 12. And surprise! An additional recipient is also being announced today!

GRANTEE #12 :: MJ Purk, Ohio :: SMA Type 1-2. Age 24. After a recent hospitalization, I have been unable to spend as much time upright. An iPad would enable me to be more independent while being in bed. I cannot access my current computer set up while side lying. An iPad, because of it's touch screen, would enable me to keep in contact with the outside world. I am president of my own organization, B4SMA, and while I am bedridden I cannot be as involved as I need to be on a daily basis. My organization involves contacting families via email and maintaining a relationship with them through various ways. I utilize social networking websites regularly to stay in contact. I utilize photo editing software on the internet, as well as video editing programs. I would love to be able to continue utilizing those programs even when bedridden. Other than work aspects, I would like to be able to have the ability to access recreational activities, such as movies, music, and occasionally games. An iPad would enable me to complete these tasks and so many others independently. An iPad is an amazing tool for individuals with disabilities and I am honored to be considered for this grant.

Congratulations MJ! We hope the iPad helps you continue your work to help others.

Per request of the Langland family, iPad grant #8 will be granted to someone new. The Langlands were so excited Chase was selected for Project Mariposa but immediately contacted us to hold his grant. They applied to Project Mariposa after exhausting all efforts with their school. Well, last week the school found a way to buy an iPad for Chase! Fantastic! The Langlands are thrilled that Chase will now have access to this new tool and feel confident it will meet his needs. They wanted to make sure another child had the same access, saying "This project is amazing and a wonderful idea. Our kids are so limited in what they can do and it's a wonderful feeling to see Chase using it and accessing it with such ease. It opens up so many new possibilities for them." So, introducing...

GRANTEE #8 :: Sophia Doebbert, Minnesota :: Sophia was diagnosed with SMA Type 1 when she was six months old. She is now eight, and is a fighter and leader within our family. By the time she was two, Sophia started showing an interest in music, art, and reading. She has always appreciated new tools which foster those activities. Specifically, Sophia would use an iPad to work with media and creative applications. There are many adaptive music programs that she would benefit from, as well as ebooks and paint programs. She would be able to readily access the web, and use skype to communicate with friends and family. Sophia's biggest challenge is math. With the volume of math/tudor programs available on the iPad, we are confident those skills would improve quickly. The iPad would also provide a level of portability currently not available to her. Her existing technologies require cables, adaptive joysticks, and ultimately must interface with her powerchair. Finally, from a social perspective, an iPad would provide a medium of play with friends as well. Many times, one of her friends will access our laptop and control the mouse, while she dictates the action. It can be a very bonding experience.

Congratulations Sophia! We can't wait to hear how you like using your new iPad.
