Gwendolyn Has a Cold and Ear Infection

October 14, 2009 by Victoria Gwendolyn has a cold and an ear infection. Right now it looks to be a mild-ish issue, but we are, of course, watching closely.

It started on Saturday with a random fever, but when a tooth broke through on Sunday our worries subsided, thinking the fever was simply teething. The only thing that gave us pause was that Gwendolyn never gets a fever -- even when teething. But, she was smiling and so we tried not to worry.

Since then her secretions have increased. They haven't seemed overly thick or pluggish (although, we have gotten a few small, bloody plugs!) -- just copious. So much so that this morning our night nurse woke us with a worried look and news that Gwendolyn was choking. I am so glad she woke us because we have never seen this type of choking episode. It was different from plug chokes and definitely let us know we needed to see Dr. Abbott.

So late today we went in and he noticed an ear infection right away. He said we caught it early and it is probably a product of a cold. (We were definitely worried about a cold because Bill is sick. He started not feeling well about two days ago, but fortunately it is a dry cough and a lost voice -- not a chest cold or something super scary for Gwendolyn's compromised lungs.) We also had a chest x-ray done just to be sure, especially because of the bloody plugs. Fortunately, that looks clear.

Both Bill and Gwendolyn started antibiotics tonight and we are all hoping it is fast acting.
