Serial Casting Round II and Construction

September 09, 2009 by Bill Strong
Never a dull moment in the Strong household...

Today, we took Gwendolyn to see her pediatric orthopedist, Dr. Early, for a checkup on how her serial casting was coming along. All good news. Her right ankle is looking very good and probably only needs another two weeks, at most, to get back to neutral. Her left ankle is also looking good, but will probably need to be casted one more time after this cast to get to neutral. Dr. Early replaced both of Gwendolyn's casts today and she smiled - literally - through the entire thing. Next week we will be taking her to get fitted for proper AFOs before another checkup, another fresh set of casts, and then hopefully she'll be coming out of these things for good and into her shiny new AFOs a few weeks after that -- fingers crossed!

In other news: today we started a pretty significant construction project at our house to completely replace our deck, the railings, and put in a wooden overhang. This is not a "fun" project that we'd be doing if we didn't have to due to water leakage issues. It means a lot of rearranging to keep Gwendolyn safe in all of this. But regardless, we're making the most of it, Gwendolyn's been a trooper through all the hammering, and we know it will be nice once it is finished -- in three, yes three weeks! (Rumor has it that the new overhang may be the perfect place for a certain birthday girl's new swing -- shhhhh!)

Before demolition today...

After the demolition today...

The evidence of the demolition today...

And, if you are in our neighborhood and need to use the loo, feel free to take a spin in our shiny new port-a-potty -- we are officially earthquake ready smile
