On edge tonight…October 01, 2008 by Bill Strong Gwendolyn is sleeping peacefully tonight and rightfully so after a very long, stressful day. After speaking with our doctors today about her struggles off bi-pap and through her cough assist treatments over the last few days, they were very concerned about her possibly coming down with an infection or that she has developed areas of atelectasis (lung sticking together). So, today we spent a good part of the day having a chest x-ray and some blood work done.
As usual, Gwendolyn did well through all of the pricking and prodding; her spirit through all of this is just amazing. This is all very stressful on her, but she bounces back so quickly. This afternoon she fell asleep minutes after leaving the hospital and didn't wake up for two hours. But almost immediately after waking up she played with Gramma and was full-of-beans as if nothing had ever happened.
The good news is that the x-ray was fine, her lungs look clear, and there wasn't anything obvious in the blood work. Still, Gwendolyn's doctors are very concerned about these changes so we are keeping her on bi-pap around the clock, increasing the number of daily respiratory treatments, and watching her very closely for signs of a fever, de-saturation, etc. We are on edge tonight, to say the least, but we are hopeful that this is just something small that will pass over the next couple of days.
