Tweet For A Cure | Custom Twitter App Targeting Members of Congress | Reached 1.5 Million+

theGSF launched "Tweet For A Cure" in September 2009 to allow constituents to voice support for the SMA Treatment Acceleration Act directly to their Members of Congress via Twitter. In less than a month this unique, custom Twitter application reached over 1.5 Million people and added much needed pressure in support of this important SMA legislation in Congress.

The Tweet For A Cure application was simple and effective, allowing users to enter their ZIP code to auto-target dynamic tweets directly to the Representatives in their State or District asking for their support of the SMA Treatment Acceleration Act. Although the application was naturally viral, there was an added viral component which gave users an opt-in option to direct message their followers asking for their support via the application as well. In addition, all of the users Twitter profile pictures were displayed on the Tweet For A Cure website displaying a virtual "wall of support" for the legislation.

At theGSF, technology and social media have always been a core pillar of our strategy in raising broad awareness of SMA and funding to help our cause. As a small nonprofit focused on a little known disease, we have harnessed the power of the Internet to reach people on a massive, global scale. And our Tweet For A Cure application is just one example of how we've used technology to get the SMA message out en masse.
