Stander

November 18, 2008 by Victoria Strong

We tried Gwendolyn in a "stander" yesterday and it was a disaster. The idea was to slowly elevate her over several days, but everything went haywire and the next thing I know I was plonking her in a bright blue thing elevated at 40 degrees. I supported her back, but Gwendolyn was immediately petrified, turned dusky gray because she couldn't catch her breath, and sobbed until the therapist left. I think it hurt her joints/bones/nerves and she may have twisted her knee and ankle. Physically she has never had pressure on her body like that and, even though it was only for a minute, it completely overwhelmed her. Bill and I were not so thrilled about the idea in the first place as we felt it was a bit too aggressive for Gwendolyn, but we also want desperately to avoid further physical problems and provide any opportunity to build strength so that, perhaps, Gwendolyn could sit in a wheelchair someday...what independence that would bring! No more stander for now. We will try some other things first and work up to the bright blue monster -- maybe.
