Project Mariposa :: {WEEK FIVE} iPad Grants #15-17

March 02, 2012 by Victoria Strong

We are so thrilled to introduce you to Project Mariposa grant recipients #15, 16, and 17. Congratulations to all of you. We hope these new iPads help open the world for you. Introducing...

GRANTEE #15 :: Angel Young, Kentucky :: Angel is two years old and has SMA Type 1. She is so smart and doesn't have the tools needed to express herself the way I know she can. She only has movement in her arms from the elbow down. She can point at things and I know she could learn so much more by using and playing with apps. And I hope playing independently would allow her to just be a child. This would be such a great thing for her. Thank you for all that you all do in the world of SMA.

GRANTEE #16 :: Blake Watson, Mississippi :: I am 26 and have SMA Type 2 and all of the immobility that comes with it. If I'm not at a computer, there is little I can do in the way of activity. For a creative person, that's pretty tough. I build websites and am plotting a website that connects people with disabilities who might otherwise be isolated so that they can collaborate on creative projects. Everyone has something to contribute, even if they can't work. An iPad would let me free myself from being tethered to the computer. I could actually get out of my chair and still be able to access the Internet instead of sitting up for hours at my desk. I also dream of mounting the iPad on my chair in order to make a documentary or short film.

GRANTEE #17 :: Arturo George, Kansas :: Arturo is six and a half years old. He loves trains and vehicles of all kinds. In addition to having Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 2, Arturo also has Autism which effects his speech. An IPad could help him in so many ways. Arturo's arms are weak and contracted and it becomes increasingly harder as he gets older for him to access regular toys and learning tools. An IPad would allow him more freedom both to play and to learn independently. It could also help him with some of his deficits in communication. Getting our son an IPad to enrich his world is a big goal of ours but unfortunately with our family's financial struggles after living with SMA for twelve years (four affected children, two in heaven and two still on earth) it is not likely something we will be able to purchase on our own anytime soon. Receiving an IPad from Project Mariposa would be a huge blessing to both of my children living with SMA. Thank you for your consideration and for all the time and effort put into this amazing project.

Next week another iPad and $50 iTunes gift card will be granted. If you have already applied and were not selected today, don't worry. Your application will roll over and you will be considered for one of the future grants. If you haven't applied yet, don't worry. We are accepting applications as long as this technology is making a difference. Don't forget to join us on Facebook -- next week's recipient will be announced there.
