Project Mariposa :: {WEEK FIFTEEN} Grants #36 - 38

Project Mariposa {WEEK FIFTEEN}. In honor of Mother's Day, today's Project Mariposa grants are going to three very deserving mothers. Being a mother is difficult. Being a mother with SMA brings an entirely new set of challenges: lifting your child up, going to a park with uneven flooring, chasing after your busy baby... Each of these women are incredibly brave and try not to let their disabilities hinder their life -- especially in their role as devoted mothers. We hope these iPad grants help make their lives just a little bit easier. Congratulations Laurie, Nicole, and Dawn!

Grantee #36 :: Laurie Sore, Florida :: I am a 42 year old mother of 2 young boys and I have Type 3 SMA. I met and married my English husband back in 1990 and moved to London. I was diagnosed in London in 1993 after 4 very painful muscle biopsies. My husband and I moved back to Florida in 2004 because it is so much more accessible for me than living in a big European city like London. We started our family when our first son Xander was born in 2005 and his little brother Levi came along in 2009. Both my boys are thankfully SMA free, though they are carriers. Having this iPad would enable me to interact more with my boys. We could play games, watch movies, listen to music. I would also be able to use this in my role as Secretary for the Greater Florida Chapter of FSMA. This would make such a difference to my life!

Grantee #37 :: Nicole Lomonaco-Sunde, California :: My Name is Nicole, I have SMA Type 3, I don't let this condition stop me from trying to live a "Normal" Life. I work full time sometimes 60 -70 hrs a week as a graphic designer and am a mom to a beautiful daughter who just turned 4. The grant of an ipad would really help me access certain things for work while allowing me to lay down and elevate my legs which due to SMA get really swollen. It is hard to do so with a laptop or computer as they are bulky. The ipad would also be very helpful when with my daughter we could do activities together that do not require lots of physical strength and energy. I would really really appreciate a grant like this.

Grantee #38 :: Dawn Kitelinger, Pennsylvania :: I am a 39 year old mother of 3 small children and I have SMA Type 3. I am the youngest of 8 children. There are 3 of us that ended up with SMA. We just lost my sister to the disease 3 yrs ago. I have been deteriorating the last few years and I have to use my wheelchair when I go out of the house and a cane inside. I can't get out in the winter here because we live in the North and we get a lot of snow so this would help me with my sanity being locked up all winter. Also, I could use this to teach my children and I could use this to communicate with my family that live 4 hrs away. I had a laptop but I broke the screen when I was using my lift chair. Being that I am disabled and have 3 kids I cant afford to buy a new screen. This would help me in so many ways. Thanks so very much for doing this for people with SMA.

Congratulations again Laurie, Nicole, and Dawn!
