Jill Takes On The Chicago MarathonSeptember 27, 2012 by Victoria Strong
Next Sunday, on October 7th, Jill Ashworth will be charging through Chicago completing a marathon. Yes, this Nevada mom of two darling little girls has spent months preparing for this big day. And it is a BIG day. There have been endless hours of training, there have been injuries, and there is constant juggling of the business of life as a parent. But Jill set a goal, never gave up...and turned her race into an opportunity to help those with SMA.
Anyone who meets Jill is immediately struck by her endless energy and positive outlook. Jill is kind and fun and generous and a very dear friend... and she is someone whose tenacity we greatly admire. Early each morning while her girls were still sleeping Jill headed out for her training runs -- before the sun was up or the Las Vegas heat started, before her husband had to leave for work, before most of us had even pushed the snooze button. Anyone who runs these types of distances knows this doesn't just happen -- it takes determination, motivation, and inspiration to keep pushing forward.
"I completed a 20 mile run last Saturday, and a half marathon yesterday. I'm ready! The best moment of my training was during my 20-miler, which I ran out at Red Rock, while also taking my NEVER GIVE UP. racing shirt on its maiden voyage. For those of you not familiar, Red Rock is a lengthy stretch of (scenic) highway, where cyclists often travel in droves. That morning, there just happened to be a cycling event taking place in that area, so there were at least several hundred cyclists riding by. (Stereo)typically stoic and standoffish toward runners (they consider us "in the way" and almost run right into us sometimes), these riders were happier than I've ever seen them... all because of my shirt! I received tons of thumbs-ups, smiles, happy nods, and even audible "Never Give Up!" shout outs from these guys. It was a time I will have with me in my heart forever. And imagine, if theGSF gets that kind of response from a bunch of cyclists... what the spectator crowd of ONE MILLION + in Chicago will have for us. Surely, that kind of inspiration will see me through to the end."
Anyone can make a difference and everyone should try. Jill certainly has! Raising over $2,200 for the Gwendolyn Strong Foundation's Project Mariposa, Jill has made a difference. We are so proud of all you have accomplished to get here Jill! We are cheering you on already -- we know you will rock Chicago!!! NEVER GIVE UP.
