GWENDOLYN’S LEGACY PROJECT: First Fully Accessible Playground in Santa BarbaraJuly 21, 2018 by Victoria Strong
We are so excited to tell you about our plans for Gwendolyn’s legacy project — the first fully inclusive playground in Santa Barbara County! Not only will this space be accessible for all to play, our vision is a whimsical playground unlike anything in this community to spark curiosity and delight for every age.
We have been working with the City of Santa Barbara’s Parks and Recreation Department for two years now and, while there is still quite a way to go before construction can begin, and a lot of money to be raised, we are absolutely thrilled to share that space at the Dwight Murphy Field (across from the zoo) has been secured and we now have the first master plan proposal with two options. And, we have an important call to action for you right away — we need YOUR voting support to select Option B as the best placement for Gwendolyn’s playground.
The City is currently conducting an online survey to gain public support and YOUR VOICE MATTERS. Please take 1 minute to answer a few simple questions and support our vision for inclusion.
We think an accessible playground is better suited in Option B location to be further away from the freeway/train for those with sensory disorders, less dirt from the freeway, more connected to the zoo, it is cooler closer to the beach, has mountain and sunset views, is a bit larger, and we want to incorporate the hillside to create cool play features. This plan also proposes adding additional accessible parking right up to it, and will build a new bathroom between the playground and the new soccer field (which will include accessible turf).
Take Survey Here:
These are the main questions we need to be answered:
4. Adding parking? -- YES
5. One way traffic? —YES
8. New multi-sport synthetic turf field? — YES
10. Which plan do you prefer? — Plan Alternative B (THIS IS THE IMPORTANT ONE!)
12. Include a baseball field or leave open? — No, leave open (there will be a formal soccer field and open space for multi-use practices)
13. Comments: Please write something in support of the Plan B location. See above for reasons.
We have big plans for this space to encompass all that our incredible little girl embodied — kindness, acceptance, determination, sense of fun, imagination, and the possibility for everyone - regardless of ability - to be out there in the midst of everything. We are honored and excited to finally bring an inclusive playground to our beautiful progressive city so all children can play side by side. We look forward to keeping you updated on the details, progress, and fundraising plans. In the meantime, thank you for voting above and you can make a direct donation to Gwendolyn’s Legacy Project here. THANK YOU for carrying Gwendolyn’s legacy with us.
