Gwendolyn's Wheels (watch your toes…)

Gwendolyn has been practicing and practicing and practicing in her power chair and she's starting to really get the hang of it. She loves it -- and that's absolutely the most important thing. Her face beams when she is in her chair and she loves "finding" Daddy and Mommy and Gramma. Watching her figure out and enjoy her new found independence in her pink power chair truly is simply amazing to watch.

I always thought that getting Gwendolyn to sit at 45 degrees plus for prolonged periods of time would be her biggest challenge with the power chair but she's doing amazingly well for 20-30 minutes at a time sitting up in the reclined seat. Actually, the biggest challenge hasn't been anything to do with Gwendolyn, it has been figuring out which control setup is best and how to position her arm and hand to stay in contact with and use the control most effectively. Given that this is only a demo chair, we are having to be a bit creative and thanks to our crafty occupational therapist, we're trying out a new handmade plastic arm holder that should help to hold Gwendolyn's arm in one place so that her hand doesn't slip off of the control. We'll get it, these things just take time...

In the meantime, watch your toes! Gwendolyn is officially off to the races...
