Gwendolyn Is Going To KindergartenApril 25, 2012 by Victoria
Oh my goodness! Oh my goodness! Today is an awesome day. We just got home from touring Gwendolyn's kindergarten. That's right. We met her principal and the teachers, got to go inside the classrooms, talked to the current kindergarten kids, saw all their neat projects and what she will be learning, and even played on the playground for a minute.
Four and a half years ago, this day was hard to envision. But now, here we are with our super excited little girl who wants nothing more than to be a big kindergartner. When we told Gwendolyn what we were doing today, she couldn't stop tapping and telling us to "Hurry up!" And all throughout the tour her eyes were darting around at everything, taking it all in, and her fingers were tap, tap, tapping feverishly. And when she went inside the classroom, our little social butterfly wanted to wave and say hello to everyone and was very curious about their science experiment -- not shy at all.
Bill and I walked away from today feeling positive, excited and secure that all the logistics will work out. The district assessed all the elementary schools and selected Washington as the best fit to meet Gwendolyn's needs and it seems perfect. She will be in a mainstream classroom which we think works best for her intellectually. All the teachers have iPads, so if Gwendolyn cannot attend or doesn't have the stamina to go every day we can Skype into school from home so she doesn't miss out. The campus is fully accessible with a big open play area -- and, get this, ocean views! In the beginning, Bill and I will take turns attending with her, but the school will also provide a nurse and for the first time we are actually feeling like we may eventually get to a place where we are comfortable stepping away. Not there yet, but we love how the school and the district approached this and are making us feel. After the tour, Gwendolyn said her favorite part was seeing the classrooms and what she will be learning and she really liked the principal. So did we. In fact, everyone was so welcoming and embracing of our Miss G.
We can not wait to pick out her backpack together, select her first day of school outfit, and begin this wonderful new adventure!
Today is definitely a very good day for Gwendolyn -- a very good day for all of us. Gwendolyn is going to kindergarten! Gwendolyn is going to kindergarten!
