Building On This Amazing Momentum...
Everyone is excitedly asking about the $100,000 Chase grant and we are just as anxious to receive it and put it to work as you are. While we haven't received the funds yet and we think it will probably take quite some time -- 8 weeks or more -- we are already making plans (don't worry you will hear and feel a huge YIPPEEE! vibrating across the earth the day the big $100,000 Chase check arrives). We are talking to researchers and organizations about their funding needs. We are thinking about what is missing in the SMA community that we can help provide. We are looking out long-term to how we can add value in areas that do not yet exist. We are trying to make sure that whatever we do with this funding and with future plans/funding, we are making a material, unique, positive difference in this community. This is an exciting time and while $100,000 is going to make a big difference, SMA needs more to make a cure attainable, to continue to increase broad awareness, and to push all avenues of this disease as far as we can until it is no longer necessary. Yes, we think big -- but we must to create change!
We hope you will join us in our big plans. We can't do this alone -- and we aren't. Telling others about SMA and getting them to join the fight to end it -- is making a difference. The fundraising that you have already done -- is making a difference. We feel that we are in the middle of a conflux of amazing circumstances within the life of this cruel disease -- a tipping point. Broad national and global awareness is happening. Genetic testing options are picking up speed. Legislators on Capitol Hill are paying attention. And, most importantly, groundbreaking research with the real potential to end this disease is charging forward. These exciting, hopeful times would not be possible without the hard work and relentless dedication of countless families, organizations, medical professionals, and researchers over the last twenty plus years. We are honored to be fighting alongside each and every one of you and there is no doubt that all of our hard work has collectively made a difference in all of these areas and we will not stop until SMA is gone.
Thank you for all of your tireless dedication and positive energy for what we are up to with GSF. We are currently working on a few exciting long-term projects, but there are many ways you can continue to help now. Here are some of the great things people are doing:
- Facebook Cause ---> Invite your friends to join our cause on Facebook and get involved in the fight to end SMA. We are very excited to now have over 6,000 members and we've raised over $4,000 through our Facebook Cause. Our next goal is 7,500 members. It's simple and free to join, click here: http://apps.facebook.com/causes/gsf
- Special Occasion Fundraising ---> Select GSF to fundraise for a special occasion. Through our Facebook Cause, you can select GSF to celebrate your birthday or the birthday of an important person in your life. Causes makes it really easy and we have been honored to be part of 1st to 60th birthday celebrations. And every person has raised over $100 this way, some as high as $800! Here is the link to see how to sign up -- http://apps.facebook.com/causes/birthdays/new?m=99a974df
- Plan A Creative Fundraiser ---> Almost anything can be turned into a way to raise funds. Friends of GSF have planned everything from stationary sales to bake sales, drink-a-thons to restaurant events, a sunset cruise to a wine tasting, a salon opening to a birthday party. The most important thing is that it is something that is positive for you and that you can have fun doing! Set a fundraising goal and get others involved to help you reach it.
- Set Up A Simple Monthly Donation Plan ---> Allocate an amount to donate every month. Breaking donations up a bit can seem a little more doable in this economy. Through the GSF Facebook Cause you can have a certain amount charged to your credit card every month -- you set the budget, they do the work.
- ShopToEndSMA.com ---> Just by beginning your normal online shopping with ShopToEndSMA.com, a percentage of what you were already going to spend online is automatically donated to GSF. It is easy and takes the guilt out of buying that cute shirt you really want

If you have ideas, go for it! We are happy to help in any way we can. Your involvement is making a difference... is helping to change this disease... and we can't thank you enough! Together we will end SMA!!!
